Visit to the Anechoic Chamber at the Instituto Superior Técnico

As part of the curriculum for the Multimedia Signal Processing, Sound and Image Laboratory, and Interactive and Immersive Audio courses in Computer Engineering and Multimedia at ISEL, we visited this curious and very unique space.
An anechoic chamber (echo-free room) is essentially characterized by absorbing all the sound energy that falls on the surrounding surfaces. It simulates an unobstructed space (open field) where only the direct wave is heard, between the sound source and the listener.
Participants had the opportunity to experience the acoustic sensation of being in a place with nothing around them (a sandy desert or a fairly high trapezoid – a high point in the atmosphere… but not too high!). We conducted demonstrations with sound generation from musical instruments (flute, saxophone, and guitar), where we were able to verify the effect of the directionality of each musical instrument and the human voice.
